Biome Description:

Temperate forests are located around the mid-latitudes of the northern (United States, Europe, China, Russia) and southern (Argentina, Australia and South Africa) hemispheres. Northern temperate forests have four seasons – winter, spring, summer and fall.

Soundscape Description:

Soundscapes in the temperate forest are highly seasonal, with spring peepers (frogs) early in the year, neotropical migratory birds and breeding birds in the spring, and insects (cicadas, katydids, and crickets) in the late summer to late fall.

Research Questions:

How do major land uses/covers (urban, agriculture, forest, wetlands) affect soundscape composition and dynamics?
How does noise affect animal’s use of habitat?
Can trees decrease noise from industrial sites?
Can we develop a soundscape ethic?
